Some believe that it's origin is not just from the Catholic church but from the Celtic's as a pagan festivity known as Samhain (pronounced sow-win). For a comprehensive background, you can read here. Whatever it's origin or tradition is not important except to realize how it arrived to USA and your home or family tradition or even substitution of something else!
I am NOT writing to debate whether participating or acknowledging this festivity is good, evil or
against Christian principles. But I do want to present the fact that it's a family choice that's needs real understanding of its history and what I am presenting here as well as the reason for setting ourselves apart and not conforming to the world. Look at the above background article for all the "stuff" we do also...from jack o lanterns to trick or treat and consider your choice based on this.
John 8:12 "When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." "
John 1:5 "The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it."
Acts 26:18 "to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.'"
"Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts
to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ
"...And you will know that I am the LORD, for you have not followed my decrees or kept my laws but have conformed to the standards of the nations around you." Ezekial 11:12
"Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:2
Each one of us need to break free from the darkness in our world and our lives
to have a life that is abundant and full of meaning
JESUS TELLS US,
I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly
"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life,
and have it to the full." (NIV)
