ISAIAH 61 says:
"The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion — to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair."

CANDLE of HOPE

Rev. Debi Tyree writes "Advent is the season in the Christian year when we hear and participate in the time of waiting for the birth of the Messiah, and we look with hope for the second coming of Christ.
It is a time of intentional prayer for the light of Christ to fill the darkest corners of our world.
We hear the voice of God in scripture. We hear the voices of God's people around the earth as we pray together for the brilliant light of Christ's love to warm the hearts and lives of humankind.
In worship we use the colors purple and blue as visual reminders of the season. One of the primary symbols of the season has become the Advent Wreath. The wreath itself is a symbol of life without end. The lighting of a candle each week marks our journey through the four weeks of Advent.
In 2009, Advent begins on November 29 and culminates with the lighting of the Christ candle on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day." ~ Rev. Debi Tyrie
• November 29, 2009 - First Sunday of Advent (purple candle, theme is Hope)
• December 6, 2009 - Second Sunday of Advent (purple candle, theme is Love)
• December 13, 2009 - Third Sunday of Advent (purple or pink candle, theme is Joy)
• December 20, 2009 - Fourth Sunday of Advent (purple candle, theme is Peace)
I guess because of my religious upbringing, I am geared towards PREPARING my heart during this time between Thanksgiving & Christmas. Living here in Mexico, which is still very Catholic, in their many traditions, I'm ready for a good time with our LORD, focusing on Love, Peace, Hope, Joy.
I recall as I started this year and looking for a Bible Reading Plan, I centered on HOPE to begin. It seems that the Advent readings I have found started with LOVE but I will follow this with HOPE. And I will WAIT and hope that I encounter a devotional series I like.
My ABS Bible Reading Plan theme for the month of December is: Called to be Free to Spread Joy Tidings. Starting off with :(1) Luke 21:5–38 (2) Psalm 2 (3) Isaiah 11:1–16 (4) Isaiah 25:1–12 (5) Isaiah 60:1–22 ... (6) Malachi 3:1–4 (7) Malachi 4.1–6 then back to LUKE 3: 1-20 and Psalms 122, 123, 124, 125 bringing us to the 3rd Sunday in Lent JOY
Another resource shares these reading for this 1st week: Scriptures: Jeremiah 33:14–16;
Psalm 25:1–10; I Thessalonians 3:9–13; Luke 21:25–36
So I guess there is a consensus of starting with LUKE 21 (just not what verses, so I'll read the entire chapter, can't go wrong with that).
This unique reading from Luke’s Gospel properly announces a significant claim of the Gospel, offering counsel regarding God’s fulfilling the promise for a just and peaceful world.
Today is the first Sunday of Advent. Today we light the Candle of HOPE.
"Come Lord Jesus. Come to brighten every corner of the world."
Psalm 25:1-10
1 To You, O LORD, I lift up my soul;
<><
As we prepare to celebrate His first coming, let us renew our anticipation of His coming again.
I love this prayer from Prime Time Ephesians 4 Ministry for today (it speaks my heart):
Dear God, I'm thirsty. I'm thirsty for Your anointing on my life and ministry. Please increase my hunger for Your Word and Your will; keep my heart humble; and strengthen my commitment to Your ways. I need my heart's desire to be for You. I want more of You, God. Please forgive my frailties and strengthen my spirit. Help me to feel Your presence and experience Your power as never before. Shine through me to touch the lost and dying world around me, for their good and Your glory. Light their lives with Your Hope! Please shower me with Your blessings that I may soak up those blessings, share them with others, and be a blessing to You. In Your name I pray, Amen.

SHIPWRECK

I built a fortress
With a hundred thousand faces
I'll keep it safe
With a hundred thousand more
But these masks are wearing thin
As You draw me in
I spent my time
On the empty and the fleeting
I spent my life
On much less than I'd dreamed
But I'm reaching out to you
To make me new
'Cause I am just a beggar here at Your door
I am just a shipwreck here on Your shore
I come empty handed
Ready to see
Your life in me changing who I've been
To who I need to be
You tell me my story
As You sift between the pages
I feel redemption
In the space between each turn
Could You take me in Your arms
And tell it just once more
Could You take me in Your arms
And tell it just once more
