"The Longing in Me - How Everything You Crave Leads to the Heart of God" By Sheila Walsh
To me, one of the marks of a good book, an exceptionally good book which this is, seems to be how well does it resonate in your soul and changes something within you as you read, and as in this one, "leads you to the heart of God". It not only inspires you and strikes a chord deep within, but reading the book helps you "change the way you respond to life's stresses" {boy, do I need this} or life in general, and your perspective is awakened in a fresh way. That's what Sheila's "Longing ..." book is ...
Sheila Walsh not only states in her intro that this is part of her prayer for this book, but that it helps the reader (me, in this case; or you, if you're bold, brave and bright enough to read it) "find the one true Source who can meet your deepest longings so you can change..." and "give you tools to heal from the past and find joy today." And no one can do this as well as Sheila, with her honest and vulnerable style of writing, weaving her own personal life story and testimony, with a well known biblical figure of a man "after the heart of God" - as she walks us through David's life and worst choices, her life and the life of other women, like me and perhaps you, to study the "Longings" and "learn how to channel those to know God more" and help us "determine what to do when we lose our way", as often we do and have yet realizing that "Longings are part of life." ... not just good or evil.

... "We long to be seen. We long to be chosen. We long to be loved. We long to know that we matter." "When those longings are left unmet, what do we do? Where do we go?" |
"It seems to me we can never give up longing and wishing while we are thoroughly alive. There are certain things we feel to be beautiful and good, and we must hunger after them." - George Elliot |

If you can't tell, I'm an avid reader and fan of Sheila Walsh - and after sharing this review today, another book popped up at Amazon that I gave into getting (because it was a steal of a deal and probably really needed by me) - you may like it too so that's why I'm sharing {though its not a new release, I'm thinking it goes well with another book by her that a dear special someone gifted me, "God Loves Broken People" (same price) and another one too that I'm thinking I should have gotten instead, "Loved Back to Life" (oh yeah), but it's too late I already clicked on this and opened}.
ReplyDeleteThe new purchase I'm starting to read this very night and weekend:"The Heartache No One Sees: Real Healing for a Woman's Wounded Heart" and this one does include the study right in the book :) {I'll let ya' know how good this one is sometime but not as a review-I don't think} ~Peggy
yep, this one's meant for me {although most of Sheila's personal history I'm familiar with} ... check out what's just in the Intro of the study guide: "Read Matthew 11:28–30, reprinted here from Eugene Peterson’s The Message: Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly." and in the Intro itself - subtitles like "A Common Problem"; "My Road to CHANGE"; "Longing to be Healed"; leading up to the first chapter "Heartache" ...
Delete"unforced rhythms of grace"... I just signed up this past week to daily audio and written emails from Emily Freeman that kinda go with this ... where she is "creating space for my soul to breathe" 7 Days of Still Moments that have been very refreshing and I recall one in particular that aligns with "rhythms of grace" (sigh) love when God speaks through others - oh and also Barbie Swihart over at her new place along with Carrie "Let Us Walk Worthy" - continual flow :)
DeleteI have heard it said that this life, as a believer, is just one long groaning until we reach our Savior's side. I have read other books that touch on this inner, spiritual longing - "The Journey of Desire" by John Eldredge, "Shattered Dreams" by Larry Crabb, "Surprised by Joy" by C.S. Lewis - and they all talk about this deep longing for something that cannot be fulfilled in this life. Of course not. God placed eternity in our hearts, and nothing or no one will ever satisfy the heaven heartache.
ReplyDelete"If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world." - C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
GOD BLESS!
Great quote and great books!!! (sigh) on your opening thought ... yep, eternity place in our hearts and the longing only HE can fill.
